Entry #6- The Sixth Sense?

Just a couple of days ago, I was pretty amazed by this video shown to me by a friend. Coincidentally, it links back to what we have covered in our comms lecture, which is- Technology! Before we carry on any further, watch it!

Your thoughts?

Have you wonder what's it like if one day you do not have to do much thinking? *Tadaaa* That day is nearing~ Looking at this creation! It's like a "personal thinker" for lazy people, don't you think so? Haha..

With this new "device" costing a mere 350 bucks and has functions that literally helps you to "think" and makes you trouble-free when it comes to deciding items, may sound convincing.. Helping you do all the thinking and decision-making, no effort needed to be put it when it comes to researching on stuff, etc..

However, on a second thought, do you really think this is something we really desire? Mm, I beg to differ actually. Why?

The most direct effect of having something you can rely on, is you being dependent on it. In this case, when this tiny little creation can work most things out for you, the likelihood will be that you will have the tendency to slowly rely on it overtime, and gradually become lazy to even make small decision such as what cups would you want in your kitchen, etc. No kidding okayyyy~ And then, will your mind deterioriate as it is not used frequently. After which, it may cause your memory to worsen and this may cause your efficiency on things to decrease! Sounds scary to me~ :/

Secondly, did you take note of one of its function of which it helps you to "label" people? Initially, I found it trather intriguing as that enables you to know more about a person in just a couple of seconds. BUT, coming to think of it, if I were to put myself in the other person's shoes, I'll feel that it's rather intrusive.. giving each individual no personal space. And, so will the interaction between two parties decrease 'cos, when u already can find out all about a person without opening your mouth to talk to them, why do otherwise? Oh well, at least this is what I think for this particular function. Frankly speaking, I don't like it!

Last but not least, let's all be frank shall we? With this thingy available, won't we take all things for granted? Meaning, we will not appreciate it when someone helps us check stuff like our flight timings, take a photograph, and so on as we would be thinking "iyoo, why so kay-poh when this genius thing of mine can do it all in one click".. Right people??

So, I'll still prefer to stick to my regular cellphone, laptop to access the Internet and my close ones to do stuff for me. :P Hahaha, sorry for being biased here though.

The question now is, does the advancing of technology benefit us necessarily? Tell me what you think! :)

  1. oh cool! well i think our culture has already been over reliant on many things such as the handphones and people adapt to it such as making bills cheaper. i think reliance is ok though! if it makes ur life easier why not? but as for ur mind deterioriating, and taking things for granted, we can always adapt to do other stuff like playing the piano? or meeting a person face to face? some things just cannot be replaced with techonology.

  2. hey joseph! Mmm, yesyes but we can't probably bring the device into our exam hall, can we? :P (though piano does train our brain to work in some way i must say, haha) :) of cos, somethings can never be replaced with technology, but you can't deny that we can't live without technology, yes? :D

  3. Cool video!
i feel that handphones is a bane to interpersonal communications. Nowadays people will just send out SMS to show emotions which may not be 100% accurate. Someone who is angry with u can also put a smiley face without much consideration. This technology is also stopping people from speaking in public properly as they are stuck within the world of text and calling each other without the need to face each other..

However, technology is such that u cannot survive without it in our contemporary society. One of the main reason will probably be convenience sigh!

Feel free to drop by my blog

  4. well well...i would love to have that device! abit expensive though.

actually in reply to your question, it can benefit us. but over-reliance on it will not pose as a good thing. technology is so advanced. even with sms, webcam or even say facebook, we can do so many things like uploading videos. no form of personal interaction is required in a sense.

persoanlly, technology is not my cup of tea for i believe that interaction with the environment or people still matter most in face-to-face interactions.

  5. I prefer face-to-face as well.

Isnt that how nature intended for us to communicate?

But that device.. THAT device, i see it as the future of communication. And i thought that smartphones and micro laptops are the pinnacle of human brilliance. This thing looks straight out of a sci-fi movie lar, basically.

(And..... Comment on my post! Thanks.. :D )

  6. well.. i think that tehnology has definitely improved our lives significantly as compared to the past. most jobs and chores that required manpower, are now being handled by machinery and the like. however, technology should not be abused in such a way that we really dont have anything else that we can do by ourselves. if that were the case, why do we even exist, right?

think the show wall-e. i guess it'd be something along that line, if technology were to really replace every aspect of our lives.

  7. Haha, this is coooool. Reminds me of Minority Report.

However, I do agree with you. When these improvements were to be integrated into our lives, I would think that it'll be too intrusive. When someone with that device looks at me, he'll know all the information about me...and that's super scary! Plus, wouldn't that be like information overload if he iis in a crowded place?

Too impersonal for me. Getting to know someone bit by bit through interactions enable us to know the person better. It's not an easy process sometimes but I think that is what mskes us treasure our relationships with other people all the more.

And to think that this device will help us make our decisions...scary to think that we'll all have balloons for brinas in the future when we won't have to think.

  8. That, is scary.
You know what movie it reminds me of? Click, by Adam Sandler. Before we know it, that 'wonder device' would eventually intrude in all of our decisions, making us not human anymore.

After all, part of life is about trials and tribulations we go through from our decisions, isn't it? With this device, there will be no room for exploration of choices, right?

And to think people always complain about how parents or people of higher authority making choices for them...
